Celebrating Black History Month at The Station | Great Migrations
View all eventsFebruary 2025
Michigan Central and Detroit Public Television came together to celebrate Black History Month with a special event exploring the history of the Great Migration of African Americans from the South. Between 1910 and 1970, hundreds of thousands of people arrived in Detroit in search of a better life. The bustling halls of Michigan Central Station provided their first glimpse of what the North might offer and, for many, the first time they had experienced integrated public spaces.
Attendees heard personal stories and learned about the significant role The Station played in welcoming generations of Black families who helped shape the Motor City.
Featured programming included:
- Kid-friendly activities, a special food menu featuring local Black-owned businesses, a Great Migrations exhibition, and the chance to share personal Great Migration stories with DPTV.
- Special screenings of the new PBS and Henry Louis Gates docuseries, Great Migrations: A People on the Move.
- Live music featuring Detroit artists.
- Shopping and refreshments provided by The Shop at Michigan Central, Yellow Light, and Neighbor x Folk.
Thank you to everyone who joined us for this special celebration. Your presence helped make the event a true reflection of the spirit and resilience of our community.
